Unsalty Salt in the Church: Worthless

Have you ever looked at the sodium content for a serving of jerky?  Wowza!!!  Makes your heart pump harder just thinking about it.  Yet without the salt, the meat would not be preserved for the length that it can be, and usable as food.  Just as salt is used, and has been used for thousands of years, to preserve the quality of meat so that it can be eaten days, weeks, even months after the kill, so salt is the preservative of the truth of God’s word in the Church.  Without salt in the jerky, the meat would spoil (never mind modern refrigerators and freezers).  Without salt in the church, it too spoils and becomes worthless.

In Luke 14:35-35 (NKJV) Yeshua says – “Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?  It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out.  He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

In Matthew 5:13 (NKJV) Yeshua says – “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?  It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

This verse in Matthew 5 is actually near the beginning of Yeshua’s Sermon on the Mount, right after the Beatitudes.  Chapters 5-7 are Yeshua’s instruction manual for how to live as His followers in a world that doesn’t believe in Him.  The disciples understood that salt was a preserving agent.  In referring to His followers as the salt of the earth in the middle of this sermon, his disciples understood, as should we, that we are the preserving agent of all that is godly in this world.

What is godliness?  Living our lives according to the ways Yeshua taught.  Just skimming through the Sermon on the Mount, one can see all kinds of instructions.  Avoid hatred and do not murder, do not judge, do not worry, stand on faith in God, be charitable, be faithful in your marriage, love your enemies, go out of your way to serve others, hunger for righteousness, be pure in heart, be peacemakers, be merciful.  The list goes on.  The passage in Luke 14 is right on the heals of Yeshua’s instruction to give up everything (father, mother, brothers and sisters) to follow Him, not clinging to this world, or he cannot be His disciple.

We are here to preserve godliness in the world of sinners.  We are here to preserve the truth of who God is, and what His Word says, in our every thought, word, and deed.  When we do not act as salt, we have lost our flavor, and are worth nothing more than to be thrown out and trampled on the ground.  Notice in Luke, we are not even worth using in the dunghill.  I’m not sure what purpose there is for salt in a dunghill, but if we aren’t worthy of that, we are truly not worthy of anything.

Now here is where we come to brass tacks.  Has the Church today lost its saltiness?  Unequivocally YES!  Oh, to be sure, there is an element of the Church that continues to preach the truth of God’s Word, without distorting it to the moral-less standards of the world.  But that element is shrinking by the hour it seems.  Church body after church body, pastor after pastor, follower after follower are sliding down slippery slopes of twisted doctrine, distorted Scripture, and outright lies about who God is and what He demands of us.  Sin is no long sin, but personal choice.  Everything is okay if you feel it is okay.  Anyway is good to get to Heaven, even thought Yeshua said that He is the ONLY way.  The Church has become spineless, squishy, weak, false, lightless-not just living in darkness, but teaching it-…the Church has lost its salty flavor.  It is worthy only of being thrown out and trampled on.

If this does not cause big red flags, bells, and warning sirens to go off in your spirit, then you need to recheck your faith.  Do you believe in the God of the Bible?  YAHWEH?  Do you believe in Yeshua (Jesus) Messiah, His Son?  Do you truly believe that God’s Word is HIS Word?  If you don’t believe everything in the Bible is His truth, then you have changed who He is.  You do not worship or serve YAHWEH, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  You serve a god that you have made up according to what you want to believe.  It is time for you to make a decision.  Choose YAHWEH, or choose the world.  As Joshua said, “Choose today whom you will serve.  As for me and my house, we will serve YAHWEH.”

If the lack of salt concerns you, but you know you have lost your flavor, it is time to digest some sodium.  Dig into God’s Word, get on your knees and pray, and create a thirst for righteousness.  Then stand in this world as a pillar of salt, a preserver of godliness and of His truth.

It is time we quit cowering at the face of feel-good, mushy, politically correct godless teaching.  It is time to stand as a beacon of light, with the strength of salt, and the power of the Holy Spirit, and unashamedly speak God’s truth…in love, always in love.

In the past couple weeks I have read a number of articles about the growing satanic worship movement in the United States.  Satanist clubs are being set up in schools in order to balance out the effect of Christian clubs.  A great symbol being set up in Central Park in New York City that honors Baal.  Whhhaaaaat??  Add to that the article which spoke of the decline of Bible reading within the church and the rise of Christians who don’t even know what the Bible teaches about major issues of the day…not that it isn’t in the Bible.  It is. People just don’t read it to know.  Add to that the fact that many church leaders no longer preach from the Bible, and some do not even mention the name of Jesus!!!

We live in a world where children are no longer educated at home, nor in the church, about the core of Christian belief.  They have no standard on which to base any belief, and so the minute it is challenged by something that sounds good, they crumble.

Our entire society no longer has a standard by which it can know right from wrong.

How is all of this paving the way for the Antichrist? Simple.  The Bible tells us that he will be a man who is pleasing to look at (appearing stronger or greater than others).  One who will speak well (using pompous words, able to speak in a very convincing manner).  People will follow him in droves (they will be in awe of him and will worship him).  It will not matter who he is, what he stands for, or what his background is.  He will be powerful, successful, proud, and deceitful.

But it will be enough that he will know the words the world wants to hear, and they will follow blindly.  To read these descriptions for yourself, and I encourage you to do so, read the following:  Daniel 7:20-21, 24-27; Daniel 8:23-25; and Revelations 13:3-18.  Remember that the antichrist is symbolically represented as a horn and as a beast.

As the dumbing down of society and of Christians worldwide continues, the door is opening wider and wider for the pompous, arrogant, strong, convincing, powerful, successful, but deceitful and evil antichrist to step foot into a position of leadership that will turn the whole world to follow him like little puppies.

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again.  If Christians are not reading their Bibles, how will they know when false teachers, preachers, prophets, and eventually the antichrist, teach them lies against God and His truth, and lead them to belief and worship of someone other than YAHWEH, the one true God?

If you change the characteristics of God, whether to make Him who you want Him to be, or whether it be from ignorance, it makes no difference.  If you have changed Him, then you do not worship Him.  You worship a god of your own making, and that god cannot offer salvation because he is not real.  Study your Bible.  Know without a doubt who YAHWEH is and why you put your faith in Him.  And in so doing, you will guard your hearts and minds from the deceptions that come increasingly more and more each day.

If we think things are bad now, I don’t believe we will have long to wait before we watch in horror (hopefully watch, and not participate) in the glorification of the man who will declare himself to be god and demand the world worship him.  BE ON YOUR GUARD!!!  Take responsibility for your own soul.  Educate yourself!  READ THE BIBLE…READ THE BIBLE…READ THE BIBLE!!!!!

#ReadtheBIBLE  Let’s make this hashtag go viral!!!

Pull out your Bible.  Open it and find the first reference to God.  It might be easier if you look in the Old Testament.  What do you see?  More likely than not you see “God,” or “LORD” (note: “Lord, lower case, refers to a title like “master”).  If you have a Jewish version, you probably see “ADONAI,” or perhaps “G-d” or “Hashem.”

These are all terms that we have learned to use as names of God.  However, none of them is God’s name.  They are, in fact, more accurately titles.  Just as “president” or “king” are titles and not names.

Why do we use titles for God rather than His name?  And why, truthfully, does it matter?

I’m glad you asked!  Using titles for God began with the Israelite people.  When God commanded them to not take His name in vain, they decided it was safest to not use it at all, lest they take it in vain quite by accident.  Better to be safe than sorry.  So they began to refer to Him as ADONAI, which means “the LORD.”  Hashem means “the Name.”  Or they used the generic term, God, except without the o…just in case.  Honestly, I really don’t know why Gentile Christians use our own version of these terms.  Especially considering the effort by the early church to completely separate itself from the Jews.  After all, we stopped obeying God’s command to observe the Sabbath and keep it holy because it was observed by the Jews.  We made our own Sabbath, contrary to God’s command, because we didn’t want to be “like them,” so why bother emulating them with God’s name?  Beats me!

Why does it matter what we call God anyway?  Isn’t the important thing that we call on Him at all?  Yes and no.  Of course, it is important that we call on God.  It is, in fact, the most important thing in life.  But let me ask you a question.  When you are calling on God, how do you know which god you are calling on?   Think about this: “god” is a title, not a name.  That is why Zeus is a god, as is Pluto, as is Buddha, as is Allah.  If we simply call God- God, He could be ANY god.  And if He could be any god, then why not Allah?  Who is to say that the God we worship isn’t, in fact, the same god that the Muslims worship? Or the Buddhists?  Haven’t we opened the door wide open to say that all gods are the same, and it doesn’t matter who you worship, as long as you do.

The problem is, that this is a lie!  And let me tell you, Satan loves it!  He has successfully used it for centuries to lead people down this slippery slope and directly to the pit of Hell.

We do have a god, and He has told us His name.  This name that distinguishes Him from every other god out there.  His name is YHVH (Yud-Heh-Vav-Heh).  Truthfully, we don’t know how to pronounce that because there hasn’t been a Jew alive who has pronounced it since the time of Moses.  Most English-speaking people pronounce it in one of three ways: Yahweh, Yehovah, or Jehovah.  Personally, I have called Him Yahweh because that is what I have learned.  However, as I look at the original Hebrew spelling, I have to say it looks more like Yehovah.

I want you to look at your Bibles again.  Go to Exodus chapter 3:15-16.  Notice that it says “the LORD.”  All caps.  Everywhere you see that, the original Hebrew translation read YHVH.  This is the first place in the Bible that God gives His name.  Prior to this, He was known by titles (or characteristics) primarily El Shaddai (meaning Almighty God).  From this point on, every time you read the LORD, you can fairly accurately, replace it with YHVH.  Read those verses with YHVH in its rightful place.

Moreover, God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel:  YHVH, God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.  This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.”  Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, “YHVH, God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, “I have surely visited you and seen what is done to you in Egypt.”

YHVH gave Moses, and the Israelites His name, and expected them to use it when referring to Him.  There was a reason for this.  In ancient times, every nation had their own god, and often gods.  They were territorial.  The gods of Egypt were in Egypt only.  If you crossed the border to another land, there were other gods there.  And they each had a name, usually based on their power (the god of the sun, the god of the moon, etc.).  There were no gods who were god over everything, and certainly none who dared to enter the realm of another god.  YHVH gave His name so that both the Israelites would know Him and recognize Him as their God.  He let them know that He was the same God whom their forefathers served.  By approaching them in Egypt, He was letting them know that He was God anywhere they were, not just the land of Canaan where their forefathers had come from.  And by sending the ten plagues on Egypt, He systematically defeated every Egyptian “god,” proving to Israel (and Egypt) that He was God of all gods.

When you read about the parting of the Red Sea, or the Jordan River, it was the god YHVH who did that.  When you read about the walls of Jericho tumbling down, it was YHVH who did that.  It was YHVH to whom King David sang, and for whom Solomon built that enormously stunning temple.  YHVH was the God who’s hand wrote on the wall before the Babylonian king Belshazzar.

It was not Allah, or Buddha, or any other god who sent His son to die for the sins of all mankind.  It was YHVH, who sent His son, Yeshua (incidentally another name not properly used) to save the world.  He is NOT the same as any other god.  And when He said, “I am YHVH your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  You shall have no other gods before Me.  You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.  For I, YHVH your God, am a jealous God.” He identified Himself by name so there would not be any doubt as to who He is and who we are to worship.

As I continue reading through Exodus, and the Old Testament, I am writing YHVH in my Bible where “the LORD” is written.  I will be writing Yeshua in above Jesus (for at the name of Yeshua every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord).

Joshua 24:15b – “But as for me and my house, we will serve YHVH.”

*All Scripture passages taken from the New King James Version with YHVH added in the place of “the LORD” by me.

*If you have been blessed by this article, please take a moment to praise YHVH.
