Pete and Repeat….

Pete and Repeat were out in a boat. Pete fell out. Who was left?

Pete.

Pete and Repeat were out in a boat. Pete fell out. Who was left?

Pete.

Pete and Repeat were….

Get the picture? ūüôā That could go on forever!!! And if you have the right children saying it, it will!!!

Do our prayers sometimes look like Pete and Repeat? I know mine do. I start praying for something, or several somethings, and every day I pray the same thing. Over and over. Day after day. Is this what I think pray without ceasing means (1 Thessalonians 5:17)? Mmm. Don’t think so.

So why do I pray the same thing over and over? Do I think that God hasn’t heard me? Maybe. Has He forgotten that I need His attention in a certain area? I wonder. Or maybe I think that if I pray over and over my persistence will win Him over, He will see things my way, and answer the way I want Him to. Could be. Honestly, I don’t have an answer to these questions. It may be a combination of all of them. Either way, I’m pretty sure this is not what God wants.

When I ask my boys to do their chores over and over again, I am considered a nag. I don’t want to be a nag to God. If I have a close relationship of faith and trust with God, I don’t think I will see a need to nag Him about my prayer requests. I’m pretty sure that is not the kind of loving communication He wants from me either.

In Matthew 6:7-8 Jesus says this: “But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask them.”

Should we stop praying or asking? Oh no! Remember all the verses where we are told to ask, seek, and knock. But! God does already know our needs before we ask. And He does desire that we talk to Him about them in prayer. Ask Him. But then what does He want from us? Faith and trust. Thank Him for hearing your prayer, and for answering in His timing, according to His will. Does that mean you should stop praying for that one thing? I don’t think so. But I do think once we have placed a request in His hands, we need to leave it there. He has it. He isn’t going to lose our requests, and He isn’t going to forget them. So let us then trust Him and thank Him for His faithfulness. This is not an easy thing to do, but then leaps of faith never are. Who better to trust to be faithful, though, than our mighty God?

EASTER IS OVER. NOW WHAT?

Have you noticed what I have noticed? Easter is over. The build up, the celebration, the ham dinner and Easter egg hunt. Its over…until next year, when we will do it all again.

I must say, one of the best parts about the day was waking my boys up with the announcement that “He is risen!” The only communication I had with my husband that morning was a text! But it was, “He is risen!” “He is risen indeed!” (Long story:-) And how many times did I shake someone’s hand at church with the same greeting? Many! It was so exciting! Exhilerating! To be celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! We rejoiced in the victory He had over death, and sin. He beat the cross that took Him down, and stood triumphantly outside the tomb, breathing in deep breaths of fresh, spring morning air. Jesus had come back to life!!!

And then…Monday. Life was back to normal. The celebration was over. Work and school were starting back up. The hum-drum of daily life. It sucked the joy right out of me! You could almost hear the high-powered vacuum! And I thought, “Why? Why should my joy only last for a day? Today should be a new beginning to a new year…a year in which I celebrate each and every day the joy of worshiping a risen Lord.”

That was when I realized that MY new year isn’t January 1st, and all those ridiculous New Years resolutions to lose weight, or do more things to please myself. It isn’t even the first day of school in the fall (when I traditionally wish my fellow teachers a happy new year:-). MY new year begins each year on Easter Sunday. It is the reason for my joy. Easter Sunday is the day I celebrate the new life I have in Christ, and the day that I am reminded that every day afterward belongs to Jesus. Easter Sunday is the starting point. It is the basis on which I live every other day that God gives me. Because I have Easter, I have meaning. Why wouldn’t the Christian mark his calendar for New Year’s Day on Easter? From now on, that is how mine will be. So even though this is a bit late…Happy New Year! For He is risen! He is risen indeed!!!!!

Oh. And my relolution? Only to live every day serving my risen Savior!

My God, My Horoscope

BLACH!!! ¬†That title just leaves me choking, just to write it!! ¬†So before I go further, I HAVE to correct that…I do not worship my horoscope! ¬†I don’t ever look at my horoscope. ¬†My horoscope is not mine. ¬†My God is the ONLY God. ¬†My God is THE God who created all things. ¬†MY God is THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE GOD. ¬†I WORSHIP¬†my GOD. ¬†My horoscope is NOT from my God…in fact, it IS from my enemy, the enemy of my God. ¬†There. ¬†Now I feel better. ¬†Ewe, that was a yucky feeling!

So. ¬†I will give you one guess as to what this blog post is about:-) ¬†You’ve got it! ¬†Horoscopes, and maybe a word or two thrown in about all those “psychics” that are making a comeback on television commercials.

How many Christians, self-proclaimed worshipers of the one true God, check their horoscope? ¬†How many look at it for guidance? ¬†Scary. ¬†How many read it just for fun…you know, kicks and giggles? ¬†Still scary. ¬†I don’t know how many read their horoscopes. ¬†But I will tell you this. ¬†If one is too many, then the number of them I see on Facebook, and hear in conversations, are far, far, FAR¬†too many!

Okay. ¬†Soapbox time is over. ¬†Now, let’s step to the table of learning. ¬†Why is this such a bad thing? ¬†Mmmm, mmmm, mmmm. ¬†Let me tell you. ¬†To the Scriptures!

Exodus 20:3 – “You shall have no other gods before Me.” ¬†: ¬†God alone is God. ¬†Anything, and everything else, was created by Him, and is either inanimate, or without the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-powerful, wisdom and knowledge of the only true God…why bother worshiping anyone, or anything else? ¬†Worshiping anything else is idol worship, which really, really displeases God.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” ¬†: ¬†If you need instruction on how to live, ¬†try the Bible. ¬†It is all the wisdom and instruction of God Himself. ¬†What better advice could you ask for? ¬†Seriously! ¬†If God’s Word is not good enough to guide you, then I don’t know what else would be. ¬†Who knows more about you, and about this world, and all the people you relate to, and all the situations you find yourself in, and all the decisions you need to make, than God??? ¬†Why turn to the stars? ¬†Do they have the mind of God? ¬†They don’t have a mind at all!

1 Peter 1:3 – “as His [Jesus] divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue….” ¬†: ¬†Along with the God-breathed (inspired) Scriptures, we also have Jesus, who, through His Spirit, gives us all the things/wisdom we need to live a godly life. ¬†If you are a Christian, then the Spirit of Jesus lives inside of you…with you ALL THE TIME. ¬†Literally knows you inside and out. ¬†Yet one who seeks the “wisdom” of horoscopes would trust their decisions to a little phrase written by a total stranger in such a vague way that is virtually guaranteed to come true in all or in part for every single of the millions of people who read it that day. ¬†Makes sense. ¬†Total ambiguity and anonymity vs the One who knows me better than I know myself.

Proverbs 27:1 – “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” ¬†& ¬†James 4:14-15 – “whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. ¬†For what is your life? ¬†It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. ¬†Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.'” ¬†: ¬†We cannot predict the future. ¬†Some random, obscure fortune, based on what the stars look like in the sky can certainly not predict our future. ¬†Only God knows what will happen today, tomorrow or 100 years from now.

Isaiah 8:19-20 (NCV) – “Some people say, ‘Ask the mediums and fortune-tellers, who whisper and mutter, what to do.’ ¬†But I tell you that people should ask their God for help. ¬†Why should people who are still alive ask something from the dead? ¬†You should follow the teachings and the agreement with the Lord. ¬†The mediums and fortune-tellers do not speak the word of the Lord, so their words are worth nothing.” ¬†: ¬†See the psychics in here? ¬†If they do not follow the teachings of God, then the word of the Lord is not in them. ¬†If the word of the Lord is not in them, THEIR WORDS ARE WORTH NOTHING. ¬†And let me ask this. ¬†If they, the psychics are not of God, who do you suppose they are of? ¬†If they are not for God, then they are against Him. ¬†And if they are against Him, they are for the enemy. ¬†And if you open the door to give the Devil, the enemy, a foothold, he will push that door open and mess with you in ways you are not prepared for.

Galatians 4:8-11 – “But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods. ¬†But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? ¬†You observe days and months and seasons and years. ¬†I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain.” ¬†: ¬†Paul didn’t get it either. ¬†If you know God. ¬†And you have been known by God, you have a relationship with Him, you know His greatness, why in the world would you want to turn to a star for advice? ¬†Why would you seek the wisdom of the moon in making a decision? ¬†Do you really think the flaming ball of gas known as the sun will take notice of you and shine an extra bright ray of light on the perfect path that is meant just for you? ¬† You would get the same level of guidance from the crack in the sidewalk you tripped on last week.

Maybe your are one of those Christians who reads your horoscope for kicks and giggles. ¬†You are not really seeking it’s wisdom. ¬†But let me ask you this question: ¬†how often does something happen and you say, “Hey! ¬†That is what my horoscope said would happen!” ¬†You have just given credit to something other than God. ¬†You have given that horoscope legitimacy, and thus given it power in your life, even though it may be minimal, it is there. ¬†As mentioned earlier, once the foot is in the door, it is that much easier to open. ¬†I am not saying, by any means, that horoscope readers are opening the door for Satanic worship. ¬†What I am saying is that you are opening the door to hear his lies, and increasing the likelihood that you will be led astray by his deceptions. ¬†We Christians have enough battles in this world without giving the devil a foothold!

Ephesians 6:11, 14a – “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. ¬†Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth.” ¬†Horoscopes are not the truth of God. ¬†His word, and His Spirit are the truths of God.

Joshua 24:15 – “And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which you fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. ¬†BUT AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD.”
